Reenen Borman

Reenen Borman.

Patatsblanc arose when Reenen Borman, the winemaker behind the celebrated Chenin Blanc from Patatsfontein in Montagu, decided that some of the Colombard on the property was too good to pass up and so devised a Colombard-Chenin Blanc blend intended to be accessible but not facile.

The 2016, consisting of 88% Colombard and 12% Chenin Blanc, has just been released. A subtle and elusive nose of citrus, peach and dried herbs while the palate displays lovely fruit purity, zippy acidity and a pithy finish. Perhaps a tad less pretty and ephemeral than the maiden 2015 but still very likeable. Price: R145 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

We really do have some extremely talented winemakers in SA. Having tasted quite a few Colombard wines since the early nineties, I would never have guessed that the grape could be capable of making anything much more than early-drinking cheap and cheerful wines.

Well, I have not tasted a Patatsblanc yet but near the end of last year, Thinus Kruger’s 2014 Aspoestertjie left me almost speechless. I found it difficult to believe that such a wine could be made from Colombard.
