Patatsfontein Chenin Blanc 2015
By Christian Eedes, 7 March 2016
The Chenin Blanc from Patatsfontein in Montagu is a really exciting wine, being utterly true to the variety but also giving you the sense that it could come from nowhere else in the world. A collaboration between Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon of artisan produce retailer Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch, the grapes come from a 1985 block on low trellis. Tasting notes and rating for the 2015 as follows:
Patatsfontein Chenin Blanc 2015
Wine Cellar price: R265
40% malolactic fermentation, maturation lasting 11 months in older oak. On the nose, white peach, subtle notes of spice and fynbos plus just the right amount of leesy character. The palate has great fruit concentration and nicely coated acidity – it’s a wonderfully poised wine and not at all weighty which makes it entirely invigorating to drink. The 2014 was startlingly good (see here) but this is even more accomplished.
#WinemagRating: 94/100.
