Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2014
By Christian Eedes, 5 October 2016
The top-end Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2014 from Elgin property Paul Cluver seems particularly subdued at this stage of its life. Made mainly from the oldest vineyard of the variety on the property, planted in 1990 to clone 115, a small percentage of fruit from younger vineyards is added for freshness. Fermentation starts spontaneously before inoculation with a selected Burgundian yeast, maturation lasting 11 months in 300-litre barrels, 20% new.
The nose shows a touch of reduction before elusive notes of red cherry and strawberry, rose, spice and some toasty oak. The palate is rich and broad with impressive fruit concentration, moderate acidity and a creamy texture. Rather impenetrable initially, it has to be said it opened up significantly over 24 hours. Price: R450 a bottle.
