Piekenierskloof Grenache Blanc 2017

Engaged in fruitful activity.

Majority shareholders in Piekenierskloof Wine Company are Potgieter and Oubaas van Zyl, who follow in the footsteps of their grandfather, Johan Abraham van Zyl, one of the pioneers to begin farming in the mountains around Citrusdal and today tend some 550ha of vineyard including old-vine Chenin Blanc and Grenache.

The Grenache Blanc 2017 from the Piekenierskloof Wine Company is a proper little bargain at R95 a bottle. From vineyards planted in 1987, the wine was fermented and matured for four months in third-fill 500-litre barrels. The nose is complex with a top note of potpourri before citrus and peach plus some yeasty complexity and subtle earth and spice while the palate has good fruit concentration, moderate acidity and a very savoury finish (alcohol: 13%). As good as anything else out there below a hundred bucks.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
