Porseleinberg 2023

By , 8 October 2025

While the 2023 growing season in the Swartland was dry, it was also cooler than 2022 and the resulting wine from Porseleinberg is that much better balanced.

Fermentation involved 85% whole-bunch and 15% crushed grapes, with 70% of the cap kept submerged and 30% receiving gentle pumpovers. The wine matured for 12 months, 90% in foudre and 10% in concrete.

The nose shows predominantly red berries alongside notes of cured meat, olive brine, rose, fynbos and white pepper. The palate is medium bodied (alc: 14%), offering good fruit expression, lemon-like acidity and tightly packed, powdery tannins. A faint stalkiness adds interest rather than detracting. Tasty indeed. Price: R850 a bottle.

CE’s rating:  95/100.
