Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2019

Slim and trim.
The 2019 vintage of the Chenin Blanc (Certified Heritage Vineyards – Planted 1976) from the Stellenbosch biodynamic grower Reyneke seems slightly attenuated compared to the excellent 2018. The nose is currently very primary but still rather pretty showing pear, citrus, peach and guava with herbs and flowers in the background while the palate is light and lean with racy acidity and a saline finish. Very good but slightly less complex and intense than the preceding year. Price: R223 a bottle.

That is quite a big difference in scores, and your perception of the quality. What would you suggest (bit of a minefield, I know) are possible reasons? Assuming same vineyard, same team involved? General reports on the 2019 vintage has been quite positive. What gives?

Hi Jaco, Great question. I haven’t seen the analysis for the 2019 but my guess is that it is slightly lower in alcohol and residual sugar than the 2018 and therefore appears that much less substantial, presumably the result of vintage variation more than anything else (let’s not forget about the infamous drought over the preceding years). Perhaps someone from Reyneke Wines would care to comment?
