Reyneke Reserve Red 2012

By , 22 January 2015

Another current-release Syrah which comes with meaningful endorsement behind it is the Reserve Red 2012 from Reyneke Wines in Stellenbosch, founder of Tim James nominating this as his red wine of 2014.

Whereas it used to be a Cab/Shiraz blend, the 2012 consists of 100% Syrah assembled from “the most interesting and expressive barrels” of the vintage. Spontaneous ferment, 35% whole bunch and maturation lasting 24 months in second-fill, 300-litre French oak barrels.

The wine has a lovely nose of raspberry, potpourri, dried herbs and spice (clove in particular). It’s a dainty wine and not one that trades off primary fruit, the flavour profile very much towards the savoury end of the spectrum with again plenty of spice and a subtle earthiness. Acidity is moderate and well integrated, tannins not too stalky, no doubt a fine wine but perhaps a little insubstantial.

Score: 92/100.
