Reyneke Reserve Red 2015

Pay more, get more.

Reyneke Reserve Red 2015 is at that end of the market where the law of diminishing returns is a big factor – you have to pay a lot more to get a minute improvement in quality. Whereas the Syrah 2015 from this Stellenbosch property sells for R160 a bottle from Wine Cellar, the Reserve Red 2015 (also from Syrah) will cost you in the vicinity of R445 a bottle.

There’s not a lot whole lot different in the winemaking – both feature some whole-bunch fermentation but while the standard label went into cask and foudre, the Reserve Red spent 20 months in second-fill barrique.

On the nose, the Reserve Red shows raspberry and wild strawberry, fynbos, herbs and white pepper as well as more base notes of earth and leather. The palate shows dense and succulent fruit, fresh acidity and fine yet grippy tannins. While the standard label is delicious (see review here), the Reserve is that much more structured and age-worthy.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.
