Rossouw, Gouws & Clarke Dry Red 2023
By Christian Eedes, 29 August 2024
The emergence of Pinotage made in a lighter, new-wave style is exciting, an example that needs to be part of the conversation being the so-called Dry Red from Rossouw, Gouws & Clarke.
“Rossouw” refers to Scholtz Ross, the grower who supplies grapes from a single vineyard planted in 1968 on his Swartland farm, while “Gouws” refers to Intellego winemaker Jurgen Gouws. “Clarke”, meanwhile, acknowledges David and Jeannette Clarke of wine distribution company Ex Animo and partners in the venture.
Winemaking for the 2023 involved 80% of the grapes undergoing whole-bunch fermentation under semi-carbonic condiditons, the other 20% pressed early and blended back.
The aromatics are gorgeous with notes of flowers, herbs, cranberry and cherry while the palate is super-light and energetic, alcohol a mere 11.5%. Pure and fresh with fine tannins, this is entirely charming. Price: R190 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
