Sakkie Mouton is getting big ratings for his wines in some quarters and good luck to him, but I tend not to understand the excitement, his Dawn of the Salty Tongues Rouge 2022 a case in point.

From Olifants River Syrah, winemaking involved 30% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting nine months in older oak.

The nose is very primary with notes of red and black berries, fynbos and floral perfume while the palate is light-bodied (alcohol: 13%) with zippy acidity, a slight saltiness to the finish but no real tannic grip. It’s clean and cleverly made but rather too easy for its approximate retail price of R680 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

While I found his Syrah delicious, one can argue that it’s overpriced. His Revenge of the Crayfish Chenin is exceptional in my opinion.

I get the feeling some are confusing style vs quality. Not all winemakers want to make big, dense, chunky, tannic Syrahs. Sakkie was exploring a fresher, more ethereal style with his maiden 2022. We tasted it again recently in a three wine blind flight of top Syrahs and it was easily the crowd favourite.
