Solace Syrah 2015
By Christian Eedes, 7 September 2017
The Swartland has pretty much taken ownership of top-end Syrah but Solace from Elgin property Iona demonstrates that other districts might also want to lay claim to the variety. 2015 is the second vintage of this wine and shows even more assurance on the part of the winemaker Werner Muller.
The nose shows red fruit, white pepper, lilies and tea leaves. The palate is medium bodied with good fruit concentration, moderate acidity and lovely ripe tannins. Fundamentally, it has a succulence about it that sets it apart from its Swartland counterparts. Port2Port price: R280 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 93/100.
