Solace Syrah 2017

By , 5 August 2020

Comfort in a time of distress.

Elgin tends to claim Pinot Noir as its signature red grape variety but the Syrah under the Solace label from the Iona team is smart, the 2017 particularly so. Grapes from north-facing vineyards that provide extra warmth and hence optimal ripening, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation.

The nose shows subtle aromas of red and blackberries, floral perfume, herbs and pepper while the palate has excellent depth of fruit, lemon-like acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Wonderfully harmonious and flavoursome. Price: R290 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
