Solace Syrah 2022

By , 30 October 2025

Elgin is often hailed as Pinot Noir country, yet I’ve long been taken by the Syrah from Brocha, farmed by Rozy Gunn, wife of Andrew, the owner of the acclaimed Iona. Solace has a delicacy that sets it apart from Syrah in Polkadraai Hills or the Swartland, and the latest 2022 release (R444 a bottle) continues in that vein.

Fermented with 10% whole bunches and matured in 500-litre barrels (10% new), the nose offers cranberry, raspberry, black cherry, rose, pronounced fynbos and white pepper. On the palate, it is succulent, with good fruit definition, crisp acidity and powdery tannins. The finish is long and dry, resulting in a balanced, stylish version of the variety. Alc: 13.4%.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
