Solms Delta Terroir Collection Grenache 2015

Last roll of the dice?

What is to become of Solms Delta, the Franschhoek property which has tried hard than many to address transformation issues? Under business rescue, winemaker Hagen Viljoen has left for Grand Provence and colleague Joan Heatlie for the Mullineuxs. While the two were there, they started the Terroir Collection, grapes sourced from around the country with a view to competing with the very best. Reviewed earlier in the year, the Verdelho & Roussanne 2015 and Syrah 2015 impressed (see here), while a Grenache 2015 completes the line-up.

Grapes from old ungrafted bushvines in Piekenierskloof, the wine contains a small tank portion to preserve freshness. The nose shows red fruit, flowers and dried herbs plus spice and white pepper. The palate, meanwhile, is light bodied with lemon-like acidity and a long, dry finish. Very attractive but quite pricy at R295 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
