Sons of Sugarland Barbera 2021
By Christian Eedes, 21 December 2021
Will Italian varieties ever make it big in South Africa? Sons of Sugarland Barbera 2021 is from grapes grown by Albertus van der Merwe of Goudini, the winemaker being the acclaimed Reenen Borman.
Attractive aromatics of red berries, tea leaf, violets and earth precede a palate showing relatively generous fruit, lemon-like acidity and soft tannins. While this makes for pleasant everyday drinking, it doesn’t suggest that local plantings of Barbera should be radically increased. Price: R215 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 89/100.
