Sons of Sugarland Syrah 2017

Guns blazing.

The pseudo-American-Old-West, utterly bonkers back label of this wine suggests that it was made “in memory of Huck, Roy and Frank Finn – Sons of Sugarland” but the initials “H”, “R” and “F” could equally apply to Henk Kotze, Reenen Borman and Fritz Schoon, the trio behind Ron Burgundy Wines, their most well-known bottling to date being Patatsfontein Steen.

The 2017 is again W.O. Stellenbosch and again 100% wholebunch fermented. On the nose, red and black berries, a little earthiness and some pepper and spice – nothing too pronounced but entirely true to the variety. The palate is light yet flavour-packed with lemon-like acidity and supple tannins. Well balanced and just pretty terrific. Approximate retail price: R315 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
