Spider Pig current releases

By , 8 July 2024

Spider Pig is the negociant label that David Wibberley started in 2015, initially just selling to family and friends, but a more formal concern from 2019 onwards. The name references a song that associated with the The Simpsons Movie (2007) created as a parody of the Spider-Man theme song and Wibberley chose it because he thought it was “engaging and easy to remember”.

Spider Pig current releases have recently enjoyed a good run in the category reports sponsored by Prescient, King Neptune Chenin Blanc 2023 and The Red Hog Syrah 2022 rating 91 (the former costing R258 a bottle and the latter R295).

Tasting notes and ratings for two other wines currently available as follows:

Price: R295
W.O. Piekenierskloof. 60% whole-bunch fermentation, matured for 11 months in 2 000-litre foudre. Red currant and strawberry plus subtle notes of musk, fynbos and white pepper. The palate is taut and focused – pure fruit, zippy acidity and lightly crunchy tannins.

The Black Pig 2021
Price: R385
64% Cinsault and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon. 50% whole-bunch fermentation for the Cinsault.
