Steenberg Lady R MCC 2011

Svelte.

Though only two vintages in, the Méthode Cap Classique that is Lady R from Steenberg is starting to shape as one of SA’s best.

Following on from the maiden 2010, the 2011 sells for R435 a bottle from Port2Port. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir from Stellenbosch and Darling and 30% Chardonnay from Robertson, it spent 52 months on the lees. On the nose, a surprising amount of citrus given the predominance of Pinot but also red apple, an intriguing herbal note, some reduction and a little leesy character but this is very much in the background. The palate meanwhile shows pure fruit, crisp acidity and a very fine mousse before a savoury finish. Classy stuff.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.
