Outlier.
The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2017 from Steenberg in Constantia is conspicuous by virtue of being the only unwooded example in its class to rate 5 Stars in Platter’s 2019.
It takes no prisoners. Grapes from the two best vineyards on the property, juice was left on the skins for 18 hours before fermentation while lees contact lasted nine months. The nose shows intense white peach, apple and naartjie plus hints of nettle and white pepper while the palate is very rich and full-bodied (alcohol: 14%), the acidity nicely coated, the finish gently savoury. Price: R212 a bottle.
