Steilpad Chenin Blanc 2022

By , 7 May 2024

When Schalk Opperman left Swarland property Lammershoek for Quoin Rock in Stellenbosch in 2020, his assistant winemaker Jorrie du Plessis was briefly installed as winemaker. The Johannes family were to acquire Lammershoek in 2023, however, and Du Plessis briefly found himself without a job although he has now taken a position at AA Badenhorst Family Wines. In the meantime, he has released the first wine under his own label, Steilpad Chenin Blanc 2022.

Grapes from two vineyards on Lammershoek, the one planted in 1968 and the other in 1973, the wine was matured for 13 months in two old 500-litre barrels. The nose shows pear, peach, quince, citrus and hay while the palate is light and fresh with a salty finish. Lean, linear and tighly wound, the alcohol is 13%. Price: R380 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
