The Great Red 2015
By Christian Eedes, 19 May 2017
The Great South African Wine Company is a spin-off undertaking started by DeMorgenzon winemaker Carl van der Merwe and owner Wendy Appelbaum, tasting notes and ratings for the maiden releases as follows:
The Great White 2015
Wine Cellar price: R160
From Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. The nose shows lime, lemon and white peach plus some yeasty complexity. The palate is relatively lean with fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Probably best suited as an aperitif but certainly has more interest than your average straight Sauvignon Blanc.
Editor’s rating: 89/100.
The Great Red 2015
Wine Cellar price: R170
From Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A top note of violets before strawberry, raspberry and cassis plus a hint of mint and some spice. The palate is glossy in a good way – plenty of fruit upfront, nice freshness, grippy but not severe. A pretty damn sexy drop.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
