The Last of the First Pinotage 2021

By , 21 June 2023

False Bay Vineyards is a Waterkloof subsidiary brand, grapes for the Last of the First Pinotage that appears in this range sourced from a 1.3ha block on planted in 1994 on the Schapenberg, the last remaining block of this variety in the area. Pinotage was famously propagated by Professor Perold in 1936 and Myrtle Grove on the Schapenberg was chosen for the first commercial plantings in 1941 and hence the name.

Winemaking for the 2021 involves whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 24 months in one 600-litre and two 225-litre barrels. Striking aromatics of red and black berries, floral fragrance, fynbos and a pleasant spicy note precede a palate with dense fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins (alcohol: 14%). It’s an extraordinarily pure and focused wine with loads of flavour. Price: R300 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 96/100.
