The Old Vine Series Skurfberg 2014

Brawn and brains.

As part of Eben Sadie’s Die Ouwingerdreeks (The Old Vine Series), the Skurfberg is never short of weight but for me can be a bit unready in its youth. No such problems with the 2014.

Wine of Origin Olifnatsriverier, grapes come from various parcels of Chenin Blanc planted between 1940 and 1955 on the outcrop that is Skurfberg situated between Clanwilliam and the Atlantic Ocean.

On the nose, pear, white and yellow peach, a touch of pineapple, ginger and some bee’s wax. The palate meanwhile shows real depth of flavour, tangy acidity and savoury finish – plenty of reined-in power but equally wonderfully easy to drink. Approximate retail price: R205 a bottle.

Winemag rating: 94/100.
