Van Niekerk Vintners new releases
By Christian Eedes, 1 September 2022
Albert van Niekerk, assistant winemaker to Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum and John Seccombe of Thorne & Daughters, also makes wines under his own Van Niekerk Vintners label. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
NEW. A blend of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Clairette, inspired by the Lieberstein phenomenon of the 1960s – grapes sourced from Swartland. Compelling aromatics of pear, peach, talcum powder, hay and dried herbs plus some yeasty complexity. The palate shows a good core of fruit and driving acidity before an intensely savoury finish. Concentrated yet simultaneously lean, this is very accomplished.
CE’s rating: 95/100.
Grenache sourced from Bot River property Anysbos. 40% whole-bunch fermentation. Subtle aromatics of rose, fynbos and red currant while the palate is light and fresh with a super-dry finish. Exceptionally delicate but not dissatisfying (alcohol is 13%).
CE’s rating: 91/100.
