Villiera Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc 2014
By Christian Eedes, 23 March 2015
Stellenbosch cellar Villiera won a silver award for wines in a series at the recent Wine Label Design Awards sponsored by Rotolabel not so much for their front labels but rather the interactive nature of the back labels.
The Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc 2014 has the following exhortation: “To discover the story of the duck and the snail, go to stories.villiera.com” and on doing so, you discover the following: “We ceased using insecticide in 2000. Instead we control pests naturally. Snails are one of our biggest problems and we have a flock of ± 1000 white Peking ducks who feed on snails. They are moved around the vineyard where snails are a problem. The ducks need to be partially fed, to have the strength to seek out snails, but if they are overfed they become lazy and spend all day on a dam.”
The wine itself shows lime through granadilla, a touch of herbs and green pepper but not all that green. It’s surprisingly rich and full given an alcohol of only 12.5% but arguably lacks some detail. Price: R91 a bottle.
