Stellenbosch cellar Waterford sourced grapes from various parcels of age within the district for this maiden-vintage wine, the longest established being 1966 and hence the Old Vine Project heritage vineyard certification on the neck label.

Fermented and aged in a combination of concrete egg and old oak, the nose shows lots of waxy, leesy, wet-wool character to go with citrus and peach while the palate is broad and flavourful, a suggestion of sweetness upfront giving way to a gently savoury finish. Price: R485 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

    Dear Christian

Any idea of what percentage the 1966 vineyard contributed to the final assembly? And what percentage minimum would that vineyard have to contribute to carry the official Old Vine Project certification?

    Cheers
    Dion

Hi Dion, The previous Old Vine Project regulations was that producers could attach seals that specified the planting date of the oldest vineyard used no matter how much it contributed to the final wine but going forwards, they will be required to specify youngest to oldest. As for the composition of the Wateford Chenin Blanc 2018, I’ve requested more information from the cellar which will hopefully be with us shortly.

Hi Dion, Christian is correct with respect to seal date. In the Waterford OVP Chenin the 1966 portion is 65% with the remainder coming from another old vine block planted in 81. From the 2020 vintage we have bottled the 2 single vineyards separately as well as made a OVP blend. Sites which are well reflected in the bottle, looking forward to showing these one day. Cheers Mark (Waterford Winemaker)
