If you’re looking for safe or predictable drinking, then Mourvèdre is to be avoided. The Circumstance Mourvèdre 2018 from Waterkloof in Somerset West has that strong gamey note on the nose that’s so typical of the variety along with red and black berries, fynbos, earth and spice while the palate is lean and fresh with firm tannins, the finish particularly dry. It has a rugged charm about it that will certainly appeal to more adventurous wine consumers. Price: R250 a bottle.
