Zonnebloem Lauréat 2013
By Christian Eedes, 8 December 2015
I like the way the red blend Lauréat from Zonnebloem has been tracking in recent years and I think the 2013 is the best yet.
A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Shiraz, 5% Petit Verdot, the wine was matured for 14 months in a combination of first- and second-fill French and Hungarian oak. Price: R117 a bottle.
It shows intense black fruit, some olive and oak spice on the nose and palate. It’s luxuriously styled being full bodied and smooth textured but doesn’t become too much thanks to bright acidity and a savoury finish.
Problematic as ever is the packaging, which apparently has been “refreshed” and now looks even more faux-Petrus than ever. Homage or rip-off? You decide.
#WinemagRating: 90/100.
