Does Chenin Blanc need serious oak in order not to be entirely ordinary? Not if the Seriously Cool 2014 from Waterkloof (R95 a bottle) is anything to go by. From 30-year-old unirrigated bushvines, the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation 90% in tank, 10% in old oak which took six months to complete.
On the nose, there’s honeysuckle, citrus, white peach and apple while the palate shows great focus with pure fruit and fresh acidity. It’s a wine that leaves you with a smile on your face.
