Uys Family Wines new releases
By Christian Eedes, 3 July 2025
In 2022, while making wine for a Hemel-En-Aarde property Spookfontein, Nelis Uys launched his own label. He remains based near Hermanus, sourcing locally and from the Swartland, making his wines at Karibib in Stellenbosch. Tasting notes and ratings for his new releases as follows:
The Uys of Spades Chenin Blanc 2023
Price: R270
70% of grapes from Swartland, 30% from Bot River. Matured in older barrels for nine months. A hint of reduction before quince, citrus and peach with some hay in the background. Good fruit weight, acidity that provides a pleasantly sour edge, the finish lightly grippy and slightly bitter. Not perfect but certainly characterful. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
The Uys of Clubs 2023
Price: R270
37% Grenache from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, 37% Syrah from Stanford, 13% Cinsault from Bot River, 13% Mourvèdre from Sondagskloof. Grenache and Cinsault underwent partial whole-bunch fermentation. Mature for 11 months in older oak. Red berries, rose, fynbos, and a hint of pepper on the nose. The palate is light yet flavour-packed, with bright acidity and ultra-fine tannins. Tightly wound and brimming with personality. Alc: 13.2%.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
