Digging it.

South Africa seems to churn out super-talented rugby loose-forwards and high-quality Chenin Blanc in almost equal measure. The Axle 2018 is made by Alex Milner of Natte Valleij fame, grapes from a 1985 block in Darling, vinification involving spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting nine months in old oak.

Straw yellow in colour, the nose shows peach, apple, a hint of spice and some waxy complexity while the palate is surprisingly rich and creamy in texture given an alcohol of just 12%, tangy acidity lending balance. Approximate retail price: R200 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
