Beaumont Far Side Mourvèdre 2019

By , 10 June 2022

Beaumont in Bot River apparently bottled South Africa’s first single-variety Mourvèdre in 1999. The variety has a reputation for making rather wild wines but the soon-to-be-released Far Side 2019 is beautifully balanced and coherent.

Winemaking involved 30% whole-bunch fermentation and the alcohol is a moderate 13%. The nose shows subtle notes of potpourri, dark berries, earth and spice while the palate is medium-bodied and full of detail – pure fruit, fresh acidity and nicely grippy tannins. A pleasure to drink. Price: R365 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
