Boschkloof Syrah 2019

By , 15 September 2021

It cannot be said that the Epilogue Syrah from Stellenbosch property Boschkloof is made with artifice but there’s always a density and bigness of flavour that feels designed to impress – see a review of the 2019 here. The standard-release 2019, meanwhile, is a revelation in how well judged it seems.

Fermentation occurred spontaneously and winemaker Reenen Borman blends in  a 15% portion of a whole-bunch batch. As for maturation, this lasts 14 months in 225-litre barrels, 10% new. The nose shows red and black berries, white pepper, herbs and lilies while the palate is beautifully balanced with real clarity of fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins. Great depth of flavour without too much weightiness makes it just about irresistible. Price: R245 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
