De Wetshof The Site Chardonnay 2006

Grace under fire.

Grace under fire.

From the Nederburg Auction preview tasting: Many of the examples of yesterday’s Chardonnay, while unquestionably good, were made in a pretty flashy style – ripe fruit, lots of lees contact, lots of oak. The Site 2006 from Robertson producer De Wetshof stood apart for its restraint.

Lime and lemon and the first, entirely pleasant signs of bottle age. Medium bodied with pure fruit, fresh acidity and a pithy, dare I say, chalky finish. Understated and in very good nick for its age. Abv 13.52%, RS 3.9g/l, TA 6.5, pH 3.1.

Only five six-bottle cases available and the reserve price per case is R1 200.

Score: 92/100.
