Santorini, the volcanic Greek island where the Assyrtiko grape originates, is hot, dry and windy –conditions that parts of South Africa are beginning to mirror as climate change takes hold. Could this variety have a future here?

The Jordans of Stellenbosch think so, having planted the country’s first mother block in 2019. The 2024 release was fermented in stainless steel and spent three months on the lees. Assyrtiko typically combines something citrus with vigorous acidity – how does this one shape up?

The nose shows lime, a hint of herbs and a touch of petrol. The palate has good fruit weight, helped by a residual sugar of 5.4g/l, but also plenty of drive thanks to a total acidity of 8.9g/l. With an alcohol of 13%, a pH of 2.87 and screwcap closure, this should last forever… Approximate retail price: R305 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Success story, it seems, but pity that Jordan Assyrtiko is sold out before it’s reviewed…

Indeed, and I have been wondering the same thing. I managed to find a few bottles online fortunately.

Hi Mike and Stewart, Every now and then, we pick up a standout bottle from a local retailer – because if we can find it, chances are you can too!

            Hi Mike,

I have a bottle for you if you’re interested and in Joburg. Cash or swap. I paid R312 a bottle.

I’m sure Christiaan can supply my email address to you directly if you’re keen. I’d prefer a swap for something old / interesting- let me know.

            Cheers,
            Stewart

Production for both the 2023 and 2024 vintages were extremely low and carefully allocated. There are now over 6.5 hectares planted on Jordan on a marginal, north-facing and windy site. The 2025 vintage will be released end September and planning a slightly wider distribution due to vineyards coming into production. Feel free to pop Melanie Melville a whatsapp on +27 (0)71 416 2824 or an e-mail at orders@jordanwines.com so she can inform you on the next release and availability (we might take some from Gary’s stash in desperate circumstances 🙂 ).
