Morgenster, the Somerset West property established by Italian businessman Giulio Bertrand in the 1990s, has increased its collection of Italian-inspired wines to four, the clean and fresh but not particularly complex Vespri Vermentino 2017 (R120 a bottle) launched yesterday, the other wines currently available being Caruso 2017 (a rosé from Sangiovese at R106 a bottle), Tosca 2014 (a blend of 75% Sangiovese, 12.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12.5% Merlot at R227 a bottle) and Nabucco 2014 (from Nebbiolo at R338 a bottle).
The stand-out wine is the Nabucco 2014. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 5% of which was new, the nose shows red cherry and blood orange plus herbs, spice and earth. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity, firm but fine tannins making for a particularly dry finish.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.

Hi Kwispedoor, Entirely agree with re the Nu Series 1 Sangiovese 2017 – it’s unwooded but the fruit integrity is impressive. Not sure why Morgenster feel compelled to attempt a “Super Tuscan” with Tosca when a wine in the style of a Chianti Classico Reserva might well be more successful.

Yes, that Nabucco is the best of the bunch, but did you not get a taste of their 2017 Sangiovese? Very smashable, cooled down.
