Tarragon Chenin Blanc 2023 is a new wine from Spice Route that joins Saffron Rosé 2023 and Chakalaka 2021 as part of the Swartland cellar’s “Spice” range of wines.

Grapes for the Taragon Chenin Blanc from a vineyard planted in 1978,  maturation lasted eight months in 500-litre barrels, 12% new. Fetching aromatics of peach, lime, hay and just a hint of cut apple while the palate is well balanced with good fruit depth and snappy acidity, the finish slightly bitter. Terrific quality relative to price at R150 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Saffron Rosé 2023 from Greanche (R150) rated 90 in this year’s Prescient Rosé Report while Chakalaka 2021 from  Carignan, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Tannat (R195 a bottle) untasted.

If I had to name the best value Chenin (sub R200 pb), I’d go for this outstanding wine, the Spice Route Tarragon Chenin, previously named Spice Route Chenin. Yes, Mulderbosch Steen op Hout, the Marras Chenins, Perdeberg Courageous and Secateurs would be there. But the Tarragon is outstanding, as the 96 Platter score indicates.
