Steel Colombard 2020

By , 15 May 2021

Jason Steel, formerly front of house at some of Cape Town’s top restaurants, is now intent on establishing his own wine brand, tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Steel Colombard 2020
Price: R195
Grapes from a 1987 vineyard on Arendsig in Robertson. Innoculated with a neutral sparkling wine yeast and matured for some 11 months in an old 500-litre barrel. Subtle notes of citrus, peach and apple on the nose while the palate is balanced and energetic – clean fruit, driving acidity and a nicely dry finish. Total production: 615 bottles.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Steel Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Price: R195
Grapes from a 1999 vineyard on Silverthorn in Robertson. Matured  for 12 months in old 25-litre barrels. Black cherry and cassis with undertones of raw meat, tilled earth and undergrowth. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and a gently savoury finish – true to variety but equally will work well as a “light red” served chilled (alcohol is a modest 13%). Total production: 560 bottles.

CE’s rating: 88/100.
