Steel new releases

By , 29 November 2023

Jason Steel continues to have a blast making his small-batch wines, a Chenin Blanc now joining his Colombard. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Steel Colombard 2022
Price: R225
Grapes from a 1987 vineyard on Robertson property Arendsig. Matured in old 500-litre barrels formerly used for the production of Vin de Constance. A pronounced note of hay before citrus, peach and a hint of earthiness. The palate has good weight and provides a pleasing sweet ‘n sour sensation, the finish possessing a slight bitterness that lends intrigue – alcohol is 13% compared to just 11.5% in the case of the previous vintage. Total production: 596 bottles.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Steel Chenin Blanc 2022
Price: R245
NEW. Grapes grown by Ernest Bruwer of Mont Blois. Vinification as above. Floral perfume, citrus, peach, apricot and a hint of leesy complexity. The palate has a notable composure about it making it eminently drinkable – pure fruit, zesty acidity and a nicely dry finish. Alc: 13%. Total production: 491 bottles.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
