Steel new releases

By , 4 May 2022

Jason Steel, currently working front of house at Constantia restaurant Foxcroft, has just released the 2021 vintage of his two wines, tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Steel Colombard 2021
Price: R225
Grapes from a 1987 vineyard on Robertson property Arendsig. Matured in old 500-litre barrels formerly used for the production of Vin de Constance. Notes of floral perfume and thatch precede citrus, peach and melon while the palate is juicy and fresh and yet not entirely without breadth thanks to that time in oak. Unpretentious and most appealing, alcohol a mere 11.5%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Steel Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Price: R225
Grapes from Silverthorn in Robertson. Matured in old 500-litre barrels. Red and black berries, some herbal lift and violets on the nose while the palate is medium bodied with pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. A little more body and structure than 2020 but still inherently modest.

CE’s rating: 88/100.
