By Christian Eedes, 15 March 2016
Three wines from Leon Coetzee-Margaux Nel initiative The Fledge & Co. going by the collective name of Jikken bareru (Japanese for “Experimental barrel”) and billed as “a little off-centre and a way of enabling us to experiment more”.
Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Not yet released.
W.O. Outeniqua. Partial skin contact, spontaneous fermentation, matured in a 300-lite French oak barrel. A floral top note before notes of pear and yellow apple. Rich and concentrated – sweet fruit offset by bright acidity. Plenty of character.
Pretty Pink 2015
W.O. Upper Langkloof. From Pinotage. Barrel fermented and matured. Cherry, strawberry, candyfloss and gentle spice. A cheerful wine with good fruit density and moderate acidity.
Vin Gris Touriga Nacional 2015
W.O. Stellenbosch. Saignée, barrel fermented and matured. Red and black cherry plus a little earthiness. Light yet flavoursome with pure fruit and bright acidity.
