The Old Vine Series Soldaat 2014
By Christian Eedes, 2 September 2015
“Unlike the usual full-bodied style of Grenache, this wine rather displays the elegant characteristics of the grape,” reads the back label of Soldaat 2014, part of Eben Sadie’s Die Ou Wingerdreeks (The Old Vine Series).
From a Piekenierskloof vineyard, the wine is restrained to the point of delicate. The nose shows wild strawberry, fynbos and spice. The palate meanwhile is light bodied but still remarkably succulent with fresh acidity and crunchy tannins. The bottle emptied itself remarkably quickly. Approximate retail price: R255 a bottle.
Winemag rating: 92/100.
