Villiera Bush Vine Blanc Fumé 2016
By Christian Eedes, 13 March 2017
The Bush Vine Blanc Fumé 2016 from Villiera is not to be trifled with. From an older block planted to the famed weather station clone of Sauvignon Blanc, juice was partially fermentation was begun in an egg-shaped tank, a portion left on the skins, before being transferred for three months of maturation in barrel, 50% new.
The result is a wine of particular structure. On the nose, green apple, white pepper and subtle fynbos – enticing and none too green. The palate, meanwhile, shows concentrated fruit, fresh acidity, the oak very well integrated. It’s shy and a rather tightly wound now but promises quite a bit for the future. Price: R144 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
