Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault 2015

What’s a fair price to pay for a Cinsault off vineyards between 40 and 50 years old bearing four tons a hectare? Buy the Waterkloof Seriously Cool 2015 from the cellar in Somerset West and it will cost you R120 a bottle whereas it starts at about ₤12.50 a bottle (the equivalent of R275) in the UK which poses some questions as to who’s getting what out of the SA winelands.
In any event, it’s a top drop. Spontaneous whole-bunch fermentation and maturation lasting nine months in used 600-litre French oak barrels, the nose is wonderfully expressive with notes of cherry, raspberry and cranberry plus olive, earth and scrub. There’s plenty of concentrated fruit on the palate despite an alcohol by volume of just 12.5% while the acidity is moderate and the tannins powdery. Our bottle was empty all too quickly.
#WinemagRating: 91/100.

Or save some money and buy Natte Valleij’s Cinsault at R95 per bottle…

Such a tasting would certainly interest me.

Hi Smirrie and Johan, We’ve been kicking the idea around for a while. Time to make it happen…

I’m with Smirrie. Put on some steel toe cap boots and kick harder, Christian! 🙂

It must be blind, though.

Christian perhaps it is time that you do a Cinsaut tasting with a line up of say 12 wines or more. I would like to read the reviews after such a blind tasting.
Wines like Pofadder (Eben Sadie) , Ramnasgras (Adi) , Saffraan (Mount Abora), BlackSmith, Leeuwenkuil, Naude Old Vines, Mullineux, Bosman , Flotsam & Jetsam (Alheit) for example.
