Landskroon Paul de Villiers Reserve 2019
By Christian Eedes, 10 February 2023
In 1874, Paul de Villiers acquired the first portion of the Paarl farm Landskroon, and in the ensuing years four generations of Pauls succeeded him as winemakers – the premium range is dedicated to Paul IV (1931 – 2002) who was in charge of the cellar for almost 40 years.
The Reserve 2019 is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 13% Malbec and 13% Cabernet Franc and 13% Malbec. The nose shows red and black berries, violets, some leafiness and pencil shavings while the palate is relatively lean with fresh acidity with firm but fine tannins, the finish nicely dry. It’s nicely done and something of a bargain at R165 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
Among the new releases, the Paul de Villiers Merlot 2019 will also please a lot of punters. The nose shows red and black berries, mint and chocolate plus some floral perfume in the background while the palate has good clarity of fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins – well balanced, the oaking nicely judged. Price: R165 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
