Moya Meaker new releases
By Christian Eedes, 16 September 2024
Damascene, the Jean Smit-David Curl partnership, gets a lot of attention and rightfully so. The Moya Meaker wines, produced by the same team, are slightly less talked about but also worth careful observation. Grapes come from Elgin property Habibi, owned by Curl and wife Genevieve Hamilton-Brown – Genevieve’s late mother, Moya Meaker, who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1959, lending her name to the range. To date, both a Riesling and a Pinot Noir have been bottled while the first Chardonnay was harvested for the first time earlier this year. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:
Riesling 2023
Price: R325
Grapes from a vineyard planted in 2006 on shale. Fermented and matured for 11 months in concrete. Flinty reduction before lime, green apple, peach and some petrol on the nose. The palate is imposing with dense fruit, punchy acidity and a super-dry finish. Sweet ‘n sour with a creamy texture. Alc: 12.16%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
Pinot Noir 2023
Price: R325
Grapes from a vineyard planted to clones 667 and 777 in 2010 on shale. Matured for 10 months in 300-litre barrels, 20% new. Red cherry, orange, musk, white pepper and a hint of vanilla on the nose. The palate is particularly vivid – pure fruit, lovely bright acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and dry. The most successful vintage to date. Alc: 13.72%.
CE’s rating: 95/100.
