Moya Meaker new releases
By Christian Eedes, 13 October 2022
The cellar on Habibi farm in Elgin is where Jean Smit makes the Damascene wines but the property also has plantings of vineyard, a Pinot Noir bottled under the Moya Meaker label now joined by a Riesling with Chardonnay set to come on line in years to come (Moya Meaker a former Miss South Africa and mother of owner David Curl’s wife, Genevieve). Tasting notes and ratings for the current releases as follows:
Moya Meaker Riesling 2021
Price: R300
NEW. Lime, green apple, white peach, a hint of fresh herbs and perhaps a touch of petrol on the nose while the palate has a certain plushness about it thanks to a residual sugar of 7g/l but equally driving acidity – good fruit definition before a bone-dry finish.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
Moya Meaker Pinot Noir 2021
Price: R300
Grapes from a high-density vineyard planted to clones 667 and 777. Matured for eight months in 300-lite barrels, 20% new. The nose shows intense rose-like perfume plus red currant, cherry and a little white pepper. The palate has a good core of fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins, the finish nicely dry. Entirely charming but not quite as complex or substantial as 2020.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
