The Roodekrantz range of wines as produced by Marius Burger Snr and Jnr plus winemaker Danie Morkel continues to grow in stature. Embedded in the winelands as all three are, they’ve identified an exceptional set of old vine Chenin Blanc sites over time and their portfolio of wines should now be considered among the best in the country. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Rhenosterbosrug 2023
Price: R330
From Paardeberg grapes, 90% from 1983 site and 10% from a 1968 site. Floral perfume, hay, pear, peach, citrus and talcum powder on the nose while the palate has a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and a dry, slightly bitter finish. Great focus and tension. Alc: 12.75%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Brand se Berg 2023
Price: R330
Grapes from an Agter-Paarl vineyard planted in 1975. Peach, yellow apple and hay on the nose while the palate is forceful in the best sense with super-concentrated fruit, moderate acidity and a savoury finish. Alc: 12.66%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

1974 2023
Price: R330
Grapes from an Agter-Paarl vineyard planted in 1974. Bruised apple, nuts and earth on the nose. Broad and textured with again medium acidity and a gently savoury finish. Alc: 12.58%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Donkermaan 2023
Price: R390
Grapes from a Stellenbosch vineyard planted in 1984. Compelling aromatics with top notes of floral perfume and fynbos before citrus, peach and apricot. The palate has big volume and big acidity. With succulent fruit and a slightly greasy in texture, this is full of flavour. Possesses an irresistible sweet ‘n sour quality.

CE’s rating: 95/100.

Die Kliphuis 2023
Price: R495
Grapes from a Swartland vineyard planted in 1977. Entrancing aromatics with top notes of potpourri and dried herbs before pear, peach and a hint of lime while the palate displays extraordinary fruit purity and crisp acidity before a pithy finish. So very accurate and harmonious, this is exhilarating drinking.

CE’s rating: 97/100.

    I fully second that, Jos!

Really wish you could add the pH, TA, alc and r/s for each wine reviewed. Would really add to value of the content, especially as it’s not always that easy to find given that not all producers are particularly diligent in providing it online. I know they are not gospel, but it does provide necessary context for purchases, especially in the fine wine space.

That said, the 2023 Kliphuis looks right up my ally. According to the factsheet it’s got a pH of 3.17 and a TA of 7.0. While it will be amazing with seafood young it will also probably age very well for at least 10 -15 years while remaining fresh. Great to get a few bottles and watch it develop over time.
