Weather Report new releases

By , 10 April 2024

Chris Keet Jnr, nephew of Chris Keet of Keet Wines, has left his viticulturist job at Gabriëlskloof in Bot River to concentrate on wines under own Weather Report label, Cabernet Franc being his focus of attention. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Climes of Cabernet Franc 2021
Price: R285
Previously named “Atlas”. Grapes from Bottelary, Paarl, Wellington and various parts of the Overberg. 90% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 14 months in old oak and a further four months in tank. Pretty aromatics of red berries, rose and some pleasant leafiness while the palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Well-balanced, understated and entirely charming.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Flight Farm Cabernet Franc 2021
Price: R420
W.O. Elgin. 70% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation largely as above. Beguiling aromatics of red and black berries, floral perfume and fresh herbs. Great fruit purity, bright acidity and nicely grippy tannins. Good structure without being too weighty – alcohol is 14.05%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
