It’s all about terroir with the Roodekrantz range. Marius Burger Sr. and Jr., together with winemaker Danie Morkel, source grapes from old vines across the winelands, with production carried out at Diemerskraal in Wellington, owned by the Morkel family.

From a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 1983. Matured for 11 months, 80% in stainless steel tank and 20% in older oak. Citrus, peach and a hint of wet wool. A generous palate offering outstanding quality relative to price – dense fruit and punchy acidity before a savoury finish. Alc: 13%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Somerkind 2024
Price: R210
From a Darling vineyard planted in 1985. Matured in older oak. Subtle aromatics of pear, peach, lemon and fynbos. The palate is understated, lean and tight – compact rather than plush fruit with fresh acidity and a pithy finish. Alc: 13.12%

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Brand se Berg 2024
Price: R350
From a Paarl vineyard planted in 1975. Cut apple, peach, ginger and a yeasty note on the nose. Rich and broad – sweetness evident but not discordant, moderate acidity, the finish savoury. Alc: 13.31%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

1974 2024
Price: R350
Grapes from a Paarl vineyard planted in 1974. Aromatics of lemon, peach and wax. The palate is luscious and flavourful – rich, thick-textured, the acidity well integrated, the finish gently savoury. Full but balanced. Alc: 13.22%

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Rhenosterbosrug 2024
Price: R350
From a Swartland vineyard planted in 1984. The nose shows potpourri, fynbos, peach, citrus and some flinty reduction. A dense core of fruit and bright acidity before a long and deeply savoury finish. Well balanced and characterful. Alc: 13.22%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Die Kliphuis 2024
Price: R500
Grapes from a Swartland vineyard planted in 1977. Hay, talc, citrus and peach on the nose. The palate shows excellent clarity of fruit, brisk acidity and a pithy finish. Superb purity and poise – deep in flavour yet still compellingly linear. Richer than 2023, with fruit integrity that remains remarkable. Alc: 12.87%.

CE’s rating: 97/100.

Donkermaan 2024
Price: R350
From a Stellenbosch vineyard planted in 1984. The nose offers exotic aromatics of citrus, peach, winter melon, pineapple and a hint of wax. On the palate, the wine is voluminous despite a modest 12.6% alcohol – rich, round and silky, bursting with flavour, with bright acidity providing balance.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Sandy Slopes 2024
Price: R350
NEW. A 50:50 blend of Chenin Blanc and Semillon from Paardeberg vineyards, the Chenin planted in 1973, the Semillon in 2003. The nose shows hay, herbs, peach, apricot, soft citrus and a hint of earth. The palate is elegant and understated without ever feeling lean or angular – tense, fresh and pithy. Alc: 12.17%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Hi Christian, what varieties are these wines? Apart from sandy slopes which you’ve mentioned.. im not quite there with deciphering a tasting note to tell me what these are.

    Thanks

They are all single site Chenin Blancs for the whites alongside a red blend and the white blend. All cracking wines. I am enjoying the last of the 2021s at the moment. All stellar!

Hi Christian, you say it’s all about terroir but don’t mention the soil for any of these? Two Paarl chenins (I assume, not mentioned) but why have they made two? Would be curious to know more about the wines and the process, all the same and just showing site? And oak, or all fermented in concrete, stainless steel?
